Square Enix offers a 30-days free trial on PC, PS4 and PS5 for newcomers that includes enough content to play hundreds of hours. With the launching of the new expansion, Endwalker, many players are willing to go back to the game and many users will want to try it for the first time. This data doesn't include the players who access through the official Square Enix launcher for the game or from PS4 and PS5 systems. On December 4th, when the early access to Endwalker was available it recorded 90k active players in Steam (the previous record was 67k in July 2021). The game has already broken its own record of active players on Steam.

Each of them has been praised for new additions in terms of plot, classes and mechanics. And now, in December 2021, the game has received Endwalker - a fourth major expansion. Since then the game has gone from strength to strength (and its community keeps growing) with several post-release updates and four major expansion packs that have improved the game experience: Heavensward in 2015, Stormblood in 2017 and Shadowbringers in 2019. The game originally launched in 2010 but after an initial negative response from both players and critics, its servers were closed in 2012 and the game was relaunched as a Realm Reborn in 2013 with Naoki Yoshida as producer and director.

An installment that has achieved the milestone of becoming a solid title and has taken its rightful place along with the best single-player games of the Final Fantasy franchise thanks to its storytelling, its combat system, its well-crafted universe full of references and easter eggs, and the transparency showed by its developers. This comes in addition to the seven days granted earlier this month.Final Fantasy XIV is, currently, one of the most popular and beloved MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) titles. As an apology, Yoshida says the company is giving all players who own the full game and have an active subscription an additional 14 days of free playtime.

A patch to address this bug is scheduled for release on December 21st.Īlthough fixes are underway, Square Enix has its work cut out if it wants to solve its MMO’s problems before it risks seeing frustrated players drift away. But this wasn’t officially announced by Square Enix, and it’s unclear whether physical sales were also affected.Īs well as the server capacity issues, Yoshida’s post also offers more details on the frustrating “Error 2002” bug, which has cropped up for players even after they’ve waited hours in virtual queues. The suspension follows similar action taken in July this year following a similar increase in new players, IGN reported at the time.

Yoshida reports that the company is “starting to see some progress” as it builds out its server capacity and says it hopes to provide a roadmap by January 2022. But Final Fantasy XIV’s explosion in popularity has coincided with a global chip shortage that’s gotten in the way of Square Enix buying new server hardware. In more normal times, a company like Square Enix would try to fix these capacity issues by investing in new servers.

He adds that new ads for the game are also being stopped, but that “Expansion packs and Collector’s Edition digital upgrades will continue to be available for existing players so that they may upgrade as needed.” Yoshida says the sales suspensions will be “phased in over the next few days” and apologizes to potential customers who are losing out, as well as the company’s retail partners.
